On August 18, 2016, the U.S. Ambassador in Mozambique, H. Dean Pittman, visited the 1ro de Maio Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) site in Chimoio city in Manica Province, in the central region of Mozambique. The AIDSFree Mozambique team took Ambassador Pittman, accompanied by colleagues from the U.S. Embassy and USAID, on a guided tour of the facility and walked them through the complete VMMC client experience. In addition, AIDSFree reported on site performance, highlighting that 1ro de Maio staff perform 20 procedures per day, mainly on clients aged 10 to 14 years. The Ambassador commended team members on their hard work and the low incidence of complications at the facility. He also reiterated the need to continue to empower local communities to understand the importance of circumcision as a strategy that will help reduce HIV infections.
